There are very few limitations when it comes to 3D printing. The fashion world is certainly going to be impacted greatly with the introduction of 3D printing technology.
3D printers pose some restrictions with the materials that the machines are able to print with, however recently there have been moves forward with the affordability of machines that are able to print different materials.
Some designers such as Australian XYZ Workshop, are making their designs downloadable which means that anybody who owns a 3D printer will be able to customize and create their own clothing. As 3D printers become more attainable, this is really groundbreaking in the fashion world.
XYZ has released a line of 3D printed clutches and purses which can be downloaded and printed at home.
XYZ Workshop has also created a watch which is printed in two different parts.
Dutch designer Iris van Herpen was one of the first fashion designers to use this technology in her work. Through using 3D printing she has created some beautiful designs.
However one of the most elaborate pieces were a pair of wings embeded with Swarovski crystals worn at a Victoria’s Secret. Victoria’s Secret joined forces with Shapeways, narrowing the gap between fashion and technology.
