Lipstick is an easy go-to if you want to immediately feel flirty (with a light pink) or edgy (with a nighttime black) or trendy (with an orange hue). But lipstick feathering can quickly leave you feeling insecure in your lip color. Be confident with lips that look like the “after” picture below!
Discover six enlightening tips to avoid lipstick feathering!
Tip #1. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! Feathering is most likely to occur on dry lips, as the lips will not have the suppleness to absorb the lipstick. Make sure your perfect pout remains moist with your favorite lip balm. (We like Burt’s Bees!)
Tip #2. Use lip liner! Lip liner acts as a sort of electric fence that keeps lipstick in its place. If you are not a huge fan of colored lip liner, then there are also invisible options that work with any lipstick color.
Tip #3. Opt for long-wear lipstick. This suggestion may seem too intuitive to even utter out loud, but it’s important! Instead of opting for a less expensive lipstick, pay the extra dollar for one marked “long-wearing” or “long-lasting.” Lipstick feathering will be minimized.
Tip #4. Blot away! Intuitive again, yes, but still oh-so important! Even if you are on-the-go, make sure to quickly press your lips together onto a piece of tissue. This step will remove any excess lipstick from your lips, making sure feathering is a thing of the past!
Tip #5. Exfoliate weekly! Again, moisturized lips are the best way to avoid feathering. Take the time each week to exfoliate your lips. A simple sugar and water mixture will quickly do the job!
Tip #6. Apply foundation. This tip may seem out-of-the-ordinary, but it can be a real life-saver! By lightly patting a small amount of foundation across your lips, you even out any lines and create a smooth surface for your lipstick to lie upon.
