Good make-up brushes are the first step to applying make-up flawlessly. Quality is definitely better than quantity!
You’d better invest in one eyeshadow brush of very good quality that you can clean over and over again without shedding and that does a good job, rather than 10 cheap brushes that lose all the hairs after cleaning them and barely blend products.
The 2 holy grails of make-up brushes are definitely MAC Cosmetics and Sigma (La Rue Moderne’s #1 choice!).
If you invest in a few good brushes of one of these two brands, you’ll have a good basis to work with. Of course, there are other beauty brands out there that are somewhat cheaper and have brushes of good as well! We recommend Sonia Kashuk, Real Techniques and Makeup Geek as budget-friendly alternatives. Check out your local Sephora or ULTA too!
Which brushes do you need?
If you’re just getting started with make-up, you should invest in a set of basic brushes, as we said before. There are so many styles, shapes, and sizes. From compact to professional makeup artist levels.
Here are the most essential ones!
Eye Shader Brush
Real Techniques Shading Brush, $6.00.
The eye shader brush is used to “pat on” eyeshadow on your lids. Lightly dap the brush flat in the eyeshadow and pat on lightly on the eye lids. Repeat if you want to build up the color intensity.
Sigma E25 Blending Brush, $12.00.
Blending brushes are used to fade out the eyeshadow. You don’t want harsh, dark eyeshadow lines in your crease, so blend those color out!
Eye Liner Brush
MAC 209 Eye Liner Brush, $20.00.
This brush is self-explanatory. If you like applying a gel eye liner, which often stays on longer than liquid eye liners, this MAC brush is the perfect one to create a smooth eye liner in whatever color you like!
Duo Brow Brush
Must we even mention this? Do not abandon those eye brows! Eye brows define your face, so take care of them! Groom your eye brows first with one side of the brush, then fill them in with the other side. We recommend the Anastasia Beverly Hills Dip Brow Pomade!
Angled Contour Brush
Sigma F40 Large Angled Contour Brush, $19.00.
If you like a more defined look in your face, then use this Sigma brush in combination with some bronzer and apply on your cheek bones, around the forehead and temples.
Sonia Kashuk Domes Blusher Brush, $17.18.
Apply some blush to the apples of your cheeks using this Sonia Kashuk brush! It will brighten up your skin and give you a healthy glow.
There are several good tools to apply your foundation, it all depends on the structure of the foundation.
If you prefer to use powder foundation:
Clinique Powder Foundation Brush, $35.00.
For liquid foundation:
For cream foundations:
Sephora Cream Foundation Brush, $38.00.
