The Melbourne Cup is Australia’s number one thoroughbred horse race. Melbourne Cup is known in Australia as “The race that stops a nation”, it is conducted annually by the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) on the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria and it starts at 3pm AEST on the first Tuesday in November. This year it will be held on Tuesday, November 4. While it may sound like your normal horserace (think Kentucky Derby) there is a unique aspect to it – the fashion.
In 1962, the VRC Committee felt that they needed to entice more women to attend the Melbourne Cup, thus creating the idea of ‘Fashions on the Field’. The event initially began with the purpose of finding the best dressed woman at the Carnival- entrants were drawn into this competition by the generous prizes. The grand prize in 1962 was the Ford Falcon Futura car valued at £1450. This event changed the nature of the races forever.
Today Myer Fashions on the Field at Flemington, is not just part of the Melbourne Cup, it has rightfully earned its title as one of the largest outdoor fashion events in Australia.
