We’ve peeped tons of boxy styles on the runways this year, from long slit kimonos to mermaid-inspired varsity jackets. Here are our three favorite runways to give you some inspiration for picking out your next trendy piece!
We are in love with the refined rocker chic looks that came down the Givenchy runway, from the tall leather boots to the edgy eyelet lacing on the coat. Both looks — the dress and the coat — have a rectangular shape which feels quite powerful. The belt on the dress and the close-fitting top paired with the coat are form-fitted details that compliment the masculine, boxy shape of the power pieces.
When looking for your own pieces, take note from Givenchy and pair a statement boxy style with something that adds an element of form fitting for the perfect balance.
Remember the pajama fad? This is the pajama fad updated to the most supreme taste, from the beautiful draping to the androgynous feel. The clothes are utilitarian: this is a woman traveler, who prizes non-ostentatious luxury. We love the pockets on the boxy top on the left, and the rich color of the teal silk on the right.
Take a note from The Row: if your going boxy, go for luxurious. The designers used silk, mink, ostrich, and cashmere in this collection.
The mermaid-infused runway from Rodarte had us reliving a posh Little Mermaid fantasy. We love the sea-inspired colors here, as well as the masculine details (like big boxy pockets on an already boxy jacket) AND the feminine ones (like sequined aqua mesh sleeves). The jackets, while very ephemeral, also have a distinctive sporty feel — the shape and striped cuffs faintly remind us of high-school varsity jackets.
Take a pointer from Rodarte and go big or go home with your boxy styles — the more oversized, the more pockets, the more mesh and buckles, the better!
