Bright tresses are nothing new: celebs have been rocking out candy colored manes for the past couple years since Nicki Minaj was all bubblegum hot pink – but a new hair trend is taking the rainbow streaks to new levels! We’ve been seeing beautiful, sand art hair popping all over Instagram and Pintrest. We’re guessing the pendulum is swinging back towards major-color since grey hair has been in style for a while now. Time to ditch the grey and get colorful!
So what’s the deal with this new trend and how can you go from blah-hair to unicorn hair?
A special hair dye debuted from Pravana is the way to start.
The brands new dye, called Vivids Locked In, allows hair stylists to layer intense, bright colors that won’t bled into each other or transfer onto lighter strands. Pravana stylist Rebecca Taylor walks through the process in the video, and it’s totally mesmerizing.
In an interview about why candy colored heads have become so popular, Psychologist Midge Wilson, PhD, Professor of Psychology at DePaul University told MTV news that it is somewhat of a self-fulfilling prophecy. As we see more and more colored hair pop up on runways, on celebs, and cool-girl blogs, more people have the desire to try out that hot pink or trendy grey hair style. As visibility of crazy hair colors rises, it becomes more socially acceptable, which also fuels the trend.
He also said hair can make us feel and look like a completely new person with relatively low risk (you can always go back or cut it all off if you are the victim of a truly tragic dye-job). So, if you are feeling like you need a change this summer, call up your hair stylist and bring along some photos of sand art!
